What is RONJIRU JAPAN?

Ronjiru (pronounced ɾond͡ʑiɾɯ) is a Japanese verb meaning to discuss, to debate or to talk about; the RONJIRU JAPAN podcast is where discussion and debate about topics related to Japan takes place in English.

Japan is a popular, energetic island nation that is at once exotic, admirable, confounding, and sometimes controversial. However, what is actually going on inside of Japan—the opportunities and routines of daily life, society, and even politics—is often not well-known to the wider world, except among Japanophiles, and from the occasional headline or story in the news.

RONJIRU JAPAN seeks to explore the multiple facets of this country through long-form conversations with Japanese business persons, politicians, influencers, athletes, actors, musicians, and experts from a variety of fields in Japan and globally. The RONJIRU JAPAN podcast is a forum that lets them tell their stories, articulate their hopes and hurdles, and share with the world the reality of modern Japan.

The podcast host, JayTee, created the RONJIRU JAPAN podcast as a platform in English for Japanese people, Japan experts and Japan-lovers openly to discuss the beautifully complex tapestry that is Japan today. His background as a businessperson, writer, translator, and bridge between Japan and the world has uniquely positioned him to tackle big ideas, small details and uncomfortable truths with guests from across the cultural, political, and socio-economic spectrum.

Simply put: the RONJIRU JAPAN community exists as a place where anyone interested in issues related to Japan can get together, watch/listen and comment on the long-form conversations we provide, give opinions, share ideas, and HAVE FUN! If we move beyond the surface-level “strange and funky Japan” that is portrayed in most MSM outlets (it’s not just anime, manga and sushi, folks, it’s far more fascinating than all that), we can all engage with fresh and different perspectives on the world.
